Matthew Abercrombie

BIOGRAPHY

Matthew Abercrombie's mixed-media work addresses duality, impermanence and memory. Born and raised in Jacksonville, he attended Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, relocating to New York City after graduation. Attending night classes at the School of Visual Arts and working in a neon shop by day, Abercrombie scoured the NYC streets for found objects and experiences. He studied experimental printmaking with Robert Rauschenberg associate Larry Wright in New York, and pursued environmental alternatives to traditional techniques. Back in Duval he worked with UNF's Jim Draper. Documenting the horrific events of the September 11 attacks in lower Manhattan have had a profound continuing effect on Abercombie's work and outlook. He seeks to acknowledge the gift of life even in the overlooked, neglected, and everyday. Having lived in NY and Seattle, between international explorations in places such as Thailand and Latin America Abercrombie is currently based in Jacksonville. His work has been featured by National Geographic, on HBO, and in collections and shows internationally.  Abercrombie occasionally offers workshops where participants can try his unique photo transfer techniques.
