He combines state-of-the-art equipment and techniques in new ways. laird believes that the best photos are created when there is a connection between the photographer and the subject. His passion for hidden beauty in our environment leads him to unforeseen photographic experimentations. You might see images emerge in his cphace series, but he challenges the viewer to understand his complex process before reaching any 'optical conclusions.'
laird's cphace images depict natural phenomena such as glaciers, rainforests, botanical gardens, swamps, reefs, mudflats and coral landscapes. This lush nature is captured with a converted camera that records infra-red waves of the electromagnetic spectrum that are invisible to the naked eye. The camera records heat levels in an image, light areas being warmest and dark ones being coolest. The image is cropped and copied, then mirrored images are merged. The images are manipulated to create a new original image, and enhanced with color variations. The result is a symmetrical image of organic forms with a central axis. Within each image, nature becomes less complex in color but much more complex in its shapes, textures and lines. |
