Betsy Cain was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and grew up in Fairfield, Alabama, the steel mill city near Birmingham. She received both her BFA and MFA from The University of Alabama, but did formative undergraduate work at Auburn University and Instituto Allende, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
She worked in Alabama and Georgia’s Artist in Schools program for many years, designing art projects for K-12th grade students before receiving a national grant through The Roswell Museum and Art Center, Roswell, New Mexico. There she learned to be a studio artist and devoted one years’ “gift of time” to painting large and to the discipline of painting everyday. She has been an independent studio artist ever since. For the past thirty years she has maintained studios in Savannah, Georgia, where she lives with her husband, David Kaminsky, a photographer.
Her most recent exhibitions include “in situ”, a solo exhibition at the Jepson Center for the Arts, Savannah, Georgia (Aug-Dec, 2011), “Physical/Metaphysical”, with Rocio Rodrigues and Don Cooper at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, the University of Georgia (Sept 2009), “unbound”, a solo exhibition at Robert Steele Gallery, Chelsea, New York City (April 2009) and “The Painter’s Reel”, Contemporary Painting in Georgia, Macon Museum of Arts & Sciences, traveling to The Jepson Center for the Arts, Savannah, Georgia, and the Morris Museum of Art, Augusta, Georgia (2008-2010).
Her most recent publication is an article in Professional Artist Magazine, Push Pull, Examining the Intensity of Betsy Cain’s Paintings, a review of the Jepson Museum exhibition, written by Stephen Knudsen, April 2012.
